Carol Robert - WATERCOLORS

Carol Robert began watercolor painting in 1993.  She has taken many inspiring workshops from local artists, in Ontario, where she lived for several years.  A few years ago, she was fortunate to be able to attend two workshops given by Gorden MacKenzie, the best-selling author of “The Watercolorist’s Essential Notebook”.

Carol is delighted that her artwork is gaining popularity and that several commissions have come her way.  Since returning to her native Nova Scotia in 2003, she has been teaching adult classes in watercolor painting.  Future workshops and lessons will be offered and the dates will be posted on this website.  Let us know by e-mail if you have a group, of at least 4 persons, who would like to take lessons. More information about watercolor classes can be found at our CLASSES/ WORKSHOPS page.

Jacques Robert - WOODCARVINGS

Jacques Robert first expressed an interest in woodcarving in mid 1987.  Carol encouraged his talent by buying him his first set of carving instruments.  Three years after Jacques began carving in earnest, he had completed several unique carvings though he had not taken any formal instruction.  He entered a local carving contest, in Ontario, Canada, and submitted two items, winning 1st  and 2nd prizes in the novice category. The judge, a world class carver himself, told Jacques that, had he entered three carvings, he would have won all three prize ribbons!

Since entering his first contest, Jacques has taken many woodcarving classes, all of them from prize winning carvers and a few from notable carvers with excellent reputations.  The most well known of these is Victor Paroyan who has won several 1st prizes at the Ward World Championship of Wild Fowl Carvers Competition that is held in Maryland every spring.

Jacques won many 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons, as well as several honorable mentions, in carving competitions in Ontario.  He has never entered a show without winning a ribbon. His most memorable feat, to date, has been 1st and best-of-class ribbons for his “Sheik” bust, in the intermediate category.  His Canvasback Drake won top prize in an “open” category contest against 28 other decorative ducks.

Several of Jacques’ carvings took 200 hours to complete and another 25 hours to paint. Many carvers specialize in bird and duck carving and Jacques has produced quite a few of these.  He also likes to vary the nature of his creations and enjoys the challenge of doing carvings that he considers more unique.  He loves horses and has carved several.  Otters, fish, dolphins and, of course, the Sheik have been among his most notable departures from the bird-carving category.

Recently, Jacques took up watercolor painting and also shows evidence of talent in this medium. He also makes wooden furniture.  He is currently carving a lovely little Grebe.
